| Essie's Grand Sire - Leo Hancock Hayes AQHA-1683157 Leo Hancock Hayes, the last breeding son of legendary foundation sire, Blue Valentine, died Saturday, June 30, 2007, of an apparent heart attack. He was twenty-seven years old. Leo Hancock Hayes was foaled in 1980, the year Blue Valentine died. Vince Hayes of Thermopolis, owned Leo Hancock Hayes until he was twenty years old. Through 2006, the aging stallion sired a lifetime total of 468 registered foals. Nearly half of them were born after he was twenty years old. Even at twenty-seven years old, nearly all of the thirty-five mares he bred this spring have been checked safe in foal for 2008. With the registration of the 2007 and 2008 foal crops his total foals will total well over 500. More than 50% have been roans. As with Blue Valentine, most of Leo Hancock Hayes? get have been used as ranch or rodeo horses with no official AQHA record. However, some are making their mark in the show pen. Bar Star Danger, a 2002 bay roan stallion has points in Tie-down and Breakaway Roping. He qualified for the AQHA World show in Junior Tie-down Roping and earned his Register of Merit (ROM) in 2006. Blue Fox Hancock, a blue roan stallion has AQHA points in working cow horse and heeling and earned his AQHA Open Performance ROM in early 2007. A bay roan daughter, Bar Star Sadie and a red roan gelding Pros Velvet Seven, both have points in tie-down roping. |

| Essie's Great Grand Sire - Blue Valentine AQHA#0097116 Ownr Hayes Bros & Merritt Hyde. 1 pt. Dally Tm Roping/Heading. Blue Valentine was foaled in Benson AZ, on Kenny Gunter\'s Ranch. Dell Haverty bought Blue Valentine. Haverty\'s wife was a daughter of Buster Hayes of Thermopolis, Wyoming. Haverty took Blue Valentine up to Wyoming to the Hayes Brothers ranch & sold them 1/2 interest in him. During the Hayes-Haverty partnership, Blue would be hauled south in the late summer for Dell to use at the fall & winter rodeos in the southwest & for the early breeding season in Arizona. He would then be hauled back up to the Hayes Ranch at Thermopolis, Wyoming for the late spring breeding season & to rope on at Cheyenne Frontier Days & other Wyoming rodeos in the summer. Blue was used for roping, ranch work steer tripping, when the calves weighed (800-900lbs). In 1968 Havety\'s daughter barrel raced on Blue(he had never been run on barrels)took 3rd @ the annual Casper, Wyoming pro rodeo, an all-girl competition. Over the years, many members of the Haverty, Merritt, & Hayes families took their turn at competing on Blue Valentine, in rodeo events. In August 1980 he died, age 24, from a ruptured intestine due to colic. The same month Buster Hayes was killed in an accident & none of the heirs were financially able to take over the ranch. It was sold & the Hayes Brothers broodmare band was dispersed. In 1983, Hyde Merritt\'s was killed in an accident & his family also had to sell his ranches & most of the horses he had spent his lifetime breeding. Hyde\'s wife, & their son Chip, managed to keep some mares & two stallions. Chip has spent years rebuilding a Blue Valentine herd & legacy. Leo Hancock Hayes, the last breeding son of Blue Valentine, foaled in 1980, died in June of 2007 of an apparent heart attack. He was owned by Randy & Susan Brookings of Lohn TX at the time. Blue Valentine horses are known for their gentle disposition, bone frame, good feet & minds. There is now only one remaining son of Blue Valentine, Blues King Fisher, who is sterile. Blue was 25% Joe Hancock breeding. This information was researched and compiled by Baru Forell Spiller, Wingate TX. For the full story on Blue Valentine go to www.HancockHorses.com |
